194, beginning
The
Bennett Run on the UK Cadillac Club website gives the day-by-day updates as the 1,000-mile Run
progressed during late September 2003. The site also features a range of
pictures taken during the 1903 and 1953 runs, some early history of the
event and a short video clip of Fred Bennett talking on BBC World News after
the ’53 Run.
Any further elaboration on the run, as
amply described on the above
link, would be superfluous. However, what would not go amiss is a picture of the
meeting of the three grandsons of the three
engineers who studied at Crewe in the late 1800s; along with one of the Julian
and his co-driver holding up their glasses of Champagne at the triumphant
conclusion of the centennial run.
As tough as the event was to organise
and as fraught as it was to carry out, I will always feel very privileged to
have been in a position to see it through from its tentative beginnings to such
an elated and, in so many ways, remarkable conclusion –
and I wouldn’t have missed a minute of it for the world.
My warmest thanks to all those who helped as well as
to all those who came from near and far to support the Bennett Run as it
progressed. |
